Banking in Montenegro has started in Nikšić in 1901 when Nikšić Savings Bank was established. Together with the establishment of Onogošt brewery, this undertaking represents one of the breaking points in the development of the town’s economic and social life.
According to the rules issued by its temporary steering committee, formed in 1901, the following goals for the savings bank were set: development, encouraging saving, expanding trade and employment in the country together with granting good loans. Interestingly, the first regular assembly took place in Nikola Brzota’s café on March 22nd, 1901.
Over time, bank changed its name and its name today is The First Bank of Montenegro and it is located in the building which is designed by Slobodan Vukajlović in 1974-5.
PhD Slobodan Vukajlović, the design engineer, is one of those few architects who you cannot put in a certain designing movement. He produces modern plans, but he never submitted to modern principles. On the contrary, he adapted them to a certain situation.
